Polar Bear Mercedes

First time I've ever seen a Polar Bear. Chester lost theirs the year I was born (1991). It was wonderful to see, as it was the 2nd animal of my 'most want to see list.'

Had she just come out of the water? It looks like it.

Mercedes has certainly moved into a better habitat up here!

I think she had from what I remember, it certainly does look as if she had. I was extremely impressed by the enclosure, it was alot more natural than alot of the 'polar' exhibits that are seen in the world-class zoos (though I can't comment on how good these are, since Mercedes is the only Polar bear I have seen).

I would rate SPACE as the most important factor for Polar(and other) Bears. So this Highland enclosure would win(though I haven't seen it) in my opinion on that score alone over other polar bear exhibits which try to replicate natural habitat- unless they were similar sized.

Good point :D. I think the Highlands exhibit is 4? acres, but not 100% sure. Also (I don't know where abouts) but I read about a European Polar Bear exhibit that was much larger than this, with a massive lake etc. Like I say though, I couldn't say where abouts it is.
