Site of the old Small Mammal House, 30 October 2013

This site looks huge now that it's been flattened. There is more land to the right where the Meerkat and Porcupine enclosures have also been demolished. I could never envisage a Baboon enclosure here before but it does look quite feasible now. Let's hope they manage to build it some time. The buildings at the top are the Vet Centre and Parrot Show.

Oh dear, what an empty space - history swept away. At least as you say there is a view of the Feathered Feats theatre though (hurry folks only one more day of shows this season before the birds head for Essex and maybe Suffolk for the winter).

Site of the old Small Mammal House....

That just leaves a bit of hoof stock accommodation & the end of the old Reptile House, if that's still there. Keeping a token old building or two for their historical value might have been nice.

They looked so rickety that I doubt whether anything else could have been done. In my opinion there are only a handful of old zoo buildings in the whole country that are worth preserving for their historical or architectural value. Nostalgia is not enough.

There is (presumably) still the Aviary that has(or had) Choughs among other species, the indoor building looks to be from that era also.

      Site of the old.....

Good point Pertinax -- the Cottage Aviary, I'd forgotten about that.
My griping about old buildings going from Paignton has a lot to do with the old Tropical and Sub-tropical Houses, but I think it was the supermarket land sell-off that did for them
Overall, Paignton remains a quality zoo.
