      I remember seeing this too, only by chance however.

      I do have a soft spot for this exhibit (childhood holidays in Devon). The offshow area was poor IMO-basically a large holding pen from what I remember.

      How old is it now, and is it listed? Do the zoo have plans to replace it?

      Opened July 1973. In my opinion it is unfortunate that this notice has weathered rather more attractively than the concrete of the Baboon Rock itself. I don't think anyone would describe it as being of architectural merit and it was designed in house, so no listing. There was some talk about redevelopment a while ago, but I don't think it has been mentioned recently.

      When it first opened it rather resembled a multi-tiered Wedding Cake. The various rock'strata' were very brightly hued but they toned down with age.

      I've always thought it a pity you can't get up to and lean on the wall as with similar baboon exhibits elsewhere e.g. on the Continent, to allow visitors longer/easier study of the occupants, and to be able to still see them when they use the lowest parts of the area too, but it was never done that way here.
