Extendable cage

This photo shows the extendable cages between the two Sumatran Tiger enclosures, female on the left and male on the right... This allows the zoo to provide both the female, Molek, and the Male, Oz, with their own territories and the animals only come together for breeding purposes in an attempt to replicate the wild... The female will also be able to keep any cubs in her territory... This photo was taken on the 20.01.2008 and at this time the two animals were together for one of their meetings (and hopefully copulations)...

wow that is a really good idea!!

It would be even better if they rotated the male and female between the 2 enclosures. Do they do this?
    • Jalur_Tiger_Cub
yes they do that! Molek and the cubs swap with Oz occasionally!

What is in the large aviary behind it?
    • Jalur_Tiger_Cub
Its not actually an aviary. It is the second tiger enclosure usually home to Oz. (but ocasionally during the day Molek and the cubs) The netting over the top allows Oz to climb up in places that would usually be to dangerous for a large tiger to climb without getting out while still letting in as much natural light as possible.

Also the enclosure is less than 2 years old... Over time a lot of that space will fill with foliage as the trees grow methinks...
    • Jalur_Tiger_Cub
I think that is possible but I also think that they may keep the trees under control. In the right hand side the bushes are already starting to take over the back of the enclosure.

They haven't reduced it yet, they may a little but it is good cover for the animals when they want some privacy but are locked out of the holding area.
