      it just dosn't look right
    • Zambar
It's an old photo, it's improved since.
    • CZJimmy
Exactly. If i was to stand in the same spot and take the photo, it would look infinitely better! This was taken a few weeks after the exhibit first opened.

They added loads more dead upright trees. In this it looks like Zaire is sitting next to a small living tree which either isn't hotwired or they have got past it as there's bare patch where they have started to 'debark' it. I wonder if it has been protected or if it has died?
    • Zooplantman
Yes, you can see "hot grass" in the photo foreground and "hot vines" on the rear artificial tree. But there is nothing on or around the tree he is sitting by.

They are very fond of the bark, even stripping it off the dead tree trunks as well. I watched one doing it- she was using her teeth and hands to tear off a sizeable strip before moving away with it.
    • Zooplantman
Yes, I've even watched gorillas strip off bark - very carefully - from trees that were hotwired.
My thought is the species of tree plays a part.

Here was my attempt at standing in a similar place and taking a photo of what it looks like now; unfortunately the limitations of my camera phone wouldn't give me a good enough photo if I stood any further to the left, so this is a compromise.
The second photo shows another view; I guess the small tree in Jimmy's photo is the probably the one to the left, just off centre, in mine. There's no significant change in the amount of bark stripped off, but that can't be said about the other trees shown.
