I remember the gaur and how impressive the bulls were. I still go and look at them whenever I visit Whipsnade. A great shot.

I've never seen gaur. What zoos have them?
    • bongorob
Only Whipsnade in the UK. Two gaur have been kept in Chester Zoo, Black (the first one to be bred in the UK) 1983-1985, and a second male 1986-1987. Neither lasted very long. They were kept in the cattle house.

Port Lypmne had them for a while, I think they sent theirs to Whipsnade

This is now tha tapir exhibit.....

Other than Whipsnade the nearest Gaur are at Paris JP, I think.....

This is actually now part of the Okapi exhibit, the house in the background is the okapi and zebra house.

Howletts had gaur in the 80s, in what is now the lemur walkthrough, and Port Lympne kept (and bred) gaur throughout the 90s, although births never outnumbered adult losses and ultimately they died out again by the early 00's.

ZSL brought in two pairs from West Berlin in 1979. One pair, which never bred, was sent to Whipsnade in 1988(?). The other had at least three calves, all male. I don't think any of the ZSL calves have been females, a considerable nuisance.

Given their close relationship to domestic cattle, and the highly inbred nature of the European population, it's always puzzled me why European zoos haven't sought some more high-tech methods with this species (say AI using sperm from bulls in the US). Ditto banteng - both are amongst my favourite animals.

There are indeed 3 gaur at the menagerie of the jardin des plantes in Paris. I put a photo of the male on the gallery.
There is also a lot of information on the web about Noah the gaur clone that was born in 2001 and died a few days after. YOU can Start with the wikipedia article. After search on google for the interesting discussion on the use or misuse of cloning endangered species with noah as an example.

Do you know if the current Whipsnade animals are descended from this stock- via the father of the current pair? I believe the mother of the current male, and the current female, both came from Europe, but I'm not sure if the previous male was a ZSL bred one or even the original Whipsnade(or ZSL) animal?
