Strawberry Poison Arrow/Dart Frog, Oophaga pumilio - a very variable species. :)

I’m sure that most zoos where I’ve seen this species it is labelled as Dendrobates pumilio.

Has this species only recently been moved to the genus Oophaga? (Obviously this is a very apt name given the tadpoles’ diet.)

Can you recommend a recent good book covering the taxonomy of poison arrow frogs?

Dendrobates has been split to within an inch of its life recently. I'm not aware of any books on the subject but there's a good checklist of the new genera here: AmphibiaWeb - Dendrobatidae

Among the 'zoo' species, D. galactonotus is now in Adelphobates, trivittata is now in Ameerega, histrionica is also in Oophaga and reticulata is in Ranitomeya. There are now just 5 species in Dendrobates - including zoo favourites leucomelas, auratus and tinctorius.

Thanks very much for your speedy reply.

I now realise that photos I added to the galley of pumilio (Antwerp) and mysteriosus (Zurich) have been labelled with scientific names that are now out-of-date.

No worries - given the rate of change in this family I had to reply quickly or it'd have changed again! :D
