Hippo leg injury (Samson)

This is the leg that Samson was limping on. Not sure how long he's had it.

Whether its his old problem or something new it looks painful. Poor guy. Hopefully whatever it is they can treat it and relieve his pain so he can walk properly. At nearly 41 he's not spring chicken but he could live another 20 years too.

That growth has been there for years- I'm thinking at least 7 years

Really? Has he always limped? I've never seen him out of the water.

It's not an injury - it is a benign tumor that he has had since before he came to Toronto. It has gradually grown and bothers him now.

Yeah, it looks like some work has been done on it, from the small incision mark seen on the side of the tumor. Probably for some follow up tests.

At least with it being a long term tumor they are very experienced with it. They know what it is and how best to treat him now that its bothering him. Hopefully they can ease the pain and increase his mobility again. It sucks for us humans to walk on an injured leg, I can imagine it being so much worse for a hippo.
