silverspot (Threpterius maculosus)
a member of the Australasian family Chironemidae (kelpfish), this species is a native of southern Australia. Only three specimens have ever been found in NZ waters, including this one, caught in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island in February 2009 (news item here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/1403715 ) Photo taken 12 June 2010
