Nice to see a good photo of her. Last time I was there I couldn't even really see due to the sun light behind them. They are a pretty species.
Many years ago I saw my first hornbill at TZ and had a shock - they were much bigger and more dramatic-looking than I had thought. That was Mr Wrinkly so when I wanted a name and avatar that meant something to me and was related to TZ - he was the first thing I thought of. Now the Von der Doekens is number 2 for me and I really look forward to seeing chicks. It seems likely considering the pairs' behavior the last few weeks.
I like the southern ground hornbills best. I had a cool experience with them where Biko and Catelyn were calling back and forth to each other across the kudu exhibit with young Olenna sitting with one of them. Their call was so cool and I could literally feel the vibrations of their call through my body. For that and that alone they get the honour of being my favourite hornbill species. I keep hoping I will repeat the experience every time I go by them. It would be nice to see another species having babies this year. Not that it's necessary. It would just be nice.
