New Roost Aviaries - Wellington Zoo

The Roost, Wellington Zoo, 10/3/2011 The first part of the 'Meet the Locals' development to open. The aviary closest holds a North Island Kaka, and behind this are Kereru, Tawny Frogmouth and Morepork, with the fifth aviary awaiting landscaping before the Kotuku, Little black Shag and Sacred Kingfisher move in. Presumably these are temporary homes, and this area is due to become 'off-show' conservation breeding aviaries when therest of 'Meet the Locals' is completed.

Today these aviaries held kakariki in the nearest one, then NZ pigeon, then the tawny frogmouth, then sacred kingfisher. The fifth was empty (appeared to be being renovated) but the signage said White heron and little black shag. Two aviaries on the other side of the building held morepork and cockatiels. I can't say these aviaries were to my taste. They looked like they had been deliberately made to make the interior look as aesthetically unpleasing and unnatural as possible, but then had some branches thrown in to try and remedy it. Not very pleasing to my eye.
