there are a pair of peninsular pronghorn antelope at aragon zoo, but they have not bred, and the only breeding group in a zoo may be the one at Los Angeles. Mexico city is humid, it rains alot ( see the vegatation in the picture), this is not a desert enviroment.

I would really advocate for some of Mexico's zoos to get involved in native species conservation, be that peninsular pronghorn (for which a cross-border recovery programme is operative - as is one for Sonoran pronghorn too), Mexican wolf, thick-billed parrot, Mexican millitary macaw .... et cetera!!

Are they a 1.1 pair or 2.0 or 0.2 combo?

Would it not be a nice idea to swap them over with LA Zoo and thus create more breeding options for the only zoo conservation breeding programme for critical pronghorn ssp. in the US? (the swap being some sub-adult or juvenile male pronghorn from LA Zoo)

I agree, it would be nice, specially for the US population. I remember when the original 4 were imported to the LA zoo they said that they would import another 2.2, but it never happened. It's been 2-3 years (maybe 4?) since that happened, so I wonder if there has been a problem that doesn't allow the zoo to import more.

At the aragon zoo there are a male and a female penisular pronghorn antelope. As much as i enjoy seeing and photographing them, they would be much better off in Los Angeles which is much closer to their natural habitat. But i think that excessive nationalism of mexican government officials will keep that exchange from happening. I hope this will change someday.
I will continue to emphasize the native fauna of the mexican and latin american zoos i visit in my photos.

During me visit to the zoo at Aragon last week i noticed that the penisular pronghorns seem to be definitely gone. Mexico city is too wet and humid for them. This leaves LA as the only zoo with a breeding group. We can hope that Profepa and Conabio, the mexican government enviromental agencies, will recognize that LA is much closer to these animals native range and in the future will only send peninsular pronghorns to Los Angeles.

I do believe it is important to showcase the Peninsular and Sonoran pronghorn (berendo) in Mexican zoos. Any zoo(s) in Mexico closely resembling the dry arid conditions these antelope do thrive in?

On another note: I als do believe that showcasing in Mexico City - where conditions are said to be far from ideal (humid and wet …) perhaps older non breeding individuals may be kept. I assume the berendo have been at San Juan de Aragon for a considerable time. So longevity wise they did survive a long tim in the far from ideal conditions here.

Estimado Kifaru, you are correct. San Juan de Aragon zoo has held penisular pronghorn for about ten or twelve years,so it could hold non - breeding animals. I am not sure if this is the same animal i photographed recently which was also a male.
