      there are no longer any rheas left in NZ sadly

      The only time I saw rhea was in 2001, and the single bird was kept on the bit of land near the monkey island where the pelican is often seen, and where all the signage for him is.

      the last rhea at Wellington was a male which didn't die until 2007! I'm guessing it was kept off-display for most of the last years of its life.

      Wonder why he was moved off exhibit, given that space hasn't changed at all since at least 2001. Do you know the last year you saw him?

      I only remember rheas from this photo. I'm pretty sure there was more than one at that time. I may or may not have seen them at other times (I was definitely back at the zoo before 2007, but I don't recall ever seeing them again).

      just for interest's sake, this enclosure (I'm 99% sure from memory) is where the hamadryas baboon enclosure now is.
