Hippo/bird exhibit

Very nice from a visitor experience, and not a bad size to the exhibit including a nice pool; however, it would be nice for the hippos to have access to the outdoors and/or natural substrate. BTW, this is a very good overall aquarium. I don't think it's that far behind the likes of Shedd and Baltimore.

I was under the impression that only fish could be kept with hippos as part of AZA regulations? Which birds are here?

When I visited in 2012 there was a number of birds (Piping Hornbill, Black-Cheeked Lovebird, Abdim Stork, Snowy-Headed Robin Chat, Taveta Golden Weaver, Cattle Egret and Hammerkop) as well as a couple of African Crested Porcupines.

Have you guys seen the plans for the renovation in this area? The area is being re-themed and will be called "Hippo Haven." I don't really see where the birds will go with all the crazy spaceship things taking over all the trees.

I see after posting this that there's been a whole thread created about the renovation!

And answering about the birds, there used to be: Abdim's Stork, Cattle Egret, Hammerkop, Piping Hornbill, Red-billed Hornbill, Violaceous Turaco, Blue-bellied Roller, Lovebird, Gold-breasted Starling, Superb Starling, Common Bulbul, Taveta Golden Weaver, and Javan Rice Finch. At one time there were Senegal Parrots, but they didn't work out, and I never saw the snowy-headed robin chat in that exhibit, but I know they were in the aquarium's collection.
