I cannot find any research confirming that. The only recent research about this topic I could find now was this: http://desalle.amnh.org/pdf/Hekkala.2010.ConservGenet.pdf Which states that genetically the Madagascar populations are recognizable a a unit and that the differentiation reflects subspecific status. Morphologically the species is too variable to make proper subspecific divisions.
