Apr. 2013 - Wildlife Canyon - Suci

I'm starting to believe that she's just a clone of her mother Emi. Suci is sadly the last Sumatran rhino at the zoo. I heard word that the zoo is working on returning Harapan back from LA since there is room for another rhino.

I\'m starting to believe that she\'s just a clone of her mother Emi. Suci is sadly the last Sumatran rhino at the zoo. I heard word that the zoo is working on returning Harapan back from LA since there is room for another rhino.

Wildlife Canyon opened in 1989 and is where guests can see rare and endangered hoofstock. Eight paddocks provide homes to six species such as camels, takins, and wild horses. Two canopy covered, tropical habitats give a natural shelter to the only Sumatran Rhinoceroses on display in the Western Hemisphere. These rhinos are Suci, and her father Ipuh. The Cincinnati Zoo is the only zoo to have one, two, and three Sumatran rhino births. Andalas, born on September 14, 2001, was the first Sumatran rhino born in captivity in 112 years. He is currently located at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia, where resides with his mate Ratu, and his son Andatu. "Andalas" Suci, born on July 30, 2004, was the second Sumatran rhino born in captivity and remains at the zoo. Harapan, born on April 27, 2007, is the third Sumatran rhino born in captivity and lives at the Los Angeles Zoo where he remains off display. In Indonesian, Andalas is a word for literally Sumatra, Suci means "holy", and Harapan means "hope". The mother, Emi, died of liver complications in 2009.

      -Emu
      -Bactrian Camel (Saari, Humphrey, Bogart)
      -Przewalski's Horse (Raisin, Bellatessa)
      -Sichuan Takin
      -Red River Hog
      -Sumatran Rhinoceros (Suci)

She must be of breeding age by now. Does the Zoo give any updates on what is being done to try and breed from her, or what is planned to do with her longerterm?
    • Moebelle
The breeding age for a Sumatran Rhino is at seven years so yes she is. I asked about the status of Suci's breeding and I got the answer, 'We (the zoo) don't know'. The woman said that Dr. Roth hasn't been around to help out with the situation like she did with Emi.

This doesn't sound good. Why is Teri Roth not fully involved I wonder? I find it difficult to believe they 'don't know' what's happening with such a high profile animal. I hope that things are more organised than it sounds from what they told you.

When they really "don`t know", they need to send her to Way Kambas, Sumatra, ASAP - there she could breed with the Andalas. I know he is her brother, but he is the only proven breeding male of this species in captivity, and she needs to breed. And if there is ever going to be an unrelated male in captivity, he`s going to be in Sumatra, not Cincinnatti.

Fully agree though I can't quite believe it has got to this stage yet.

They should return Harapan back to Cinci to breed with his sister or they shoudl send both to Way Kambas!

I believe it has been said that Harry is indeed moving back to Cincy. Whether it is to breed, we'll have to wait and see.
