New mesh structure for seal exhibit

After repeated attempts of staff to get hooligans to stop throwing things into the seal's pool, we now have a photo blockade. :/

Personally, I hate this addition. Aesthetically, I think it looks ridiculous and obviously hampers the view. I would like to think it was less "hooliganism" and more "poor judgment" that allowed too many hats and sunglasses and items set atop the viewing wall to fall into the pool since the ledge directly overlooks the water. That said, while I believe this plan was 'in motion' before the Pittsburgh/Cape Dog tragedy, I cannot say that I hadn't seen a few reckless parents setting their small children atop the wall to watch the pinnipeds as well; with the direct drop, in a way, I guess, I suppose, it might be for the best. Perhaps this will step-up the eventual plans for a new seal/sea lion exhibit that was seen in the recent Masterplan.

This structure has nothing to do with the Pittsburgh incident in fact I believe the zoo had lost one if not two seals prior to that incident and were already staffing volunteers to try to help remedy the problem.Others zoos have seal exhibits which the visitors can look directly into the pool however in Cleveland the situation was completely outta control. It looks terrible but the zoo had no choice! They also might not be done here as we have heard that they might wanna enclose the whole thing so that they can open the upper deck which has been closed since fall 2012.

@ TT223 - to correct, I know the mesh is not a result of the Pitt incident, merely suggesting CMZ was probably 'fine' with the fact it also eliminates the potential for a similar possiblity in the one locale at CMZ I have seen parents foolishly prop their children upon.

That said, I'm all about promoting zoo animal welfare, but it is still god-awful ugly.

While at the Cleveland Zoo's Sun Bear exhibit today I looked across the way and saw barricades, tarps and construction equipment at the sea lion enclosure and said to myself "wow are they finally going to begin work on a permanant solution to what was once a nice exhibit" ? However upon a closer look the exhit was closed for painting of its railings.Nothing like closing a major exhibit in the middle of summer to paint. Its not like global warming is not resulting in mild winters in which stuff like that can be done :D

In the meanwhile the sea lion/polar upper deck remans closed going on 2 yrs now! Gotta love Cleveland !

There has also been a thick net placed over the pinnipeds. I felt like I was looking at seals indoors!

      WHY is the deck closed?

      Mesh

The mesh REALLY obstructs the seals' exhibit. What's next? Mesh up African Elephant Crossing? The orangutan dome? The whole zoo? People shouldn't THROW THINGS into the exhibit.
