Columbus Zoo - Lion Exhibit

July 2008. An old enclosure that isn't as nice as the one that the siberian tigers have. Who's the king of the jungle now?

I'm not sure if I have ever explained this - these exhibits are hideous and will be demolished as soon as the lions can be transferred over to African Savannah, which should be in four years. I have not heard a definite answer about what exhibit will replace this one, if one does.

      Why are they so hideous?

I dont think the space is adequate, granted its larger than some zoos but I still think its rather small. I also dont like the "cage" feel to it because of the vertical metal bars, but I should cut the exhibit some slack because its over ten years old.

      "Over ten years old!!!"

Woodland Park zoo's gorilla and lion exhibits are over 30 years old

Congo Gorilla Forest at the Bronx is nearly 10 years old

Columbus has no excuse for this very poor exhibit, especially if it is ONLY 10 years old

Okay, reduakari I didn't say it was that bad. Look at all the foliage. There is a lot of enrichment so as a temporary home for three lions, one in the north yard and two in the south yard, I think this is an Average exhibit, not a bad one.

reduakari, im beginning to see that you don't seem too like much in the zoo world. Not every exhibit can be perfect and i'd like to see you pay the money for them to be fixed

I love many things about many zoos, but I'm not blind to the many inadequate exhibits and practices that are out there. Particularly at zoos that have the resources to do better, like Columbus. If zoos and zoo supporters don't continue to push for excellence, PETA and others will be happy to use their shortcomings against the continued existence of all zoos. And don't believe for a minute that these groups don't have a huge and growing influence.

These enclosures are not inadequate....they provide for what the animals need and are over 20 years old. And if the only problem that anyone seems to have with them this the wire...then that is their prerogative.

So now im just some blind 13 year old? Well, in new this was coming at some point anyways. AND THE ZOO DOES HAVE THE RESOURCES! did you not read what ColumbusZoo001 wrote above about how there moving out of this exhibit in about four years to a much better exhibit. Anyways, this exhibit should suffice to the time being as it has plenty of greenery, ample room and satisfactory hiding. And to tell you the truth, I think the only thing PETA and IDA care about right now is elephants and the "sea kittens" projects.

P.S. If that blind comment was directed towards my age, thats really low
