Can't they get out? I first heard about binturongs when one escaped (the now closed) Southport Zoo, I've only ever seen them in indoor enclosures or traditional barred ones.

This is on an island with a water moat. It is an old individual and quite a celebrity at the zoo.

One of the best exhibits I've seen for them is the one at Overloon Zoo in the Netherlands. Two low-walled enclosures on either side of the visitors' path are linked by branches that pass over head. When I visited, two Binturings were sprawled on the branches right above visitors' heads and within touching distance.

You know I love this site but then I also hate it - because that's another two zoos I'm going to have to add to my must visit list - ha. I've read binturongs smell of popcorn - I guess I'd find out at Overloon.

I have further pictures of Olmense Zoo to add to the gallery that might put you off wanting to visit! This old Binturong has got the long end of the stick.

Overloon is only a small collection but is well worth checking out if you are in the Netherlands - a superb zoo nation.

Oh dear, still at least a lot of zoos are trying to improve things, hopefully that'll be the case at Olmense soon.
