      Two comments:

1- It's amazing how much time orangutans spend in the trees while in the wild, and yet how much time they spend on the ground in zoos.

2- If I'm not mistaken, isn't that exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo only about a year old?

Yes, the exhibit is about 1 year old. These orangutans actually do use their climbing structures a lot more than I seen any other orangutan do in any other exhibit. They were walking towards the tree and got on it. I like how the zoo lets them use the tree in the middle, which is big and tall with lots of branches they could sit in.

This is lightyears ahead of there old, tiny, metal cage

Yes it is, and the fact that they are allowed to use the tree it makes it even better.

My thoughts exactly. When I visited in December of 2002 the Orangutan "cage," for that's all you could call it, was horrid. But even then this zoo was already on the way up. I personally think their Chimpanzee habitat is amongst the very best I've ever seen. Their whole Africa section, some 11 acres I believe, was outstanding.
