gazelle and rhino

March 17, 2012. Temporary barrier for elephant construction has been taken down. Animals now have access to the newly expanded yard - this photo is taken from the walkway to the new elephant exhibit. You can see where the temporary fence was - the line of dirt going across the middle of the photo (veering slighly upwards from right to left).

Do you know the approximate size of the newly expanded rhino/antelope paddock?

Sorry, I am really terrible about estimating sizes (like when people ask how many square feet my condo is, I have absolutely no idea). But if I had to guess I would say this exhibit is maybe an acre?

Right now there is one elderly white rhino and one elderly marabou stork and one kori bustard and one spekes gazelle. However, we have three more spekes gazelle in quarantine and one young marabou stork in quarantine. The gazelles will go in here for sure, but the additional stork is still being decided as far as I know (not sure if they will get along). The rhino status is up in the air from what I have heard. We may try to get more to mix with the current female or we may wait until she passes of old age (which cannot be that far off) and then seek a new group.

Maybe google maps can be used to estimate the size. I would do it, but I don't know which one is the rhino exhibit...
