The empty space to the right of the zebra is the old elephant yard. As far as I know, no firm decisions on what will happen to this area.

I love how there is a polar bear right in the middle of Africa.

Yes, totally out of place. Polar bears in the desert is one area where I definitely have a different opinion than zoo staff (at least senior staff).

Thou i never been to this zoo I think what reid park zoo should do is discontinue the polar bear exhibit ( btw fyi Polar bears dont belong in the desert) :) and put Pygmy Hippos or River Hippos in that exhibit with underwater viewing. And for the open space next to the zebras some rare hoofstock would be nice or hows the current lion exhibit. maybe build a new exhibit for them. or a nice kopje exhibit with klipspringers would be cool. i can go on and on all day lol

Me too, but I have learned it does no good. I actually did make some suggestions for the polar bear area (put black footed penguins in the water and rock side and put hyena or jackal in the grass side). But we are now an official partner of Polar Bears International and whether I agree with it or not, zoo staff is determined to keep a polar bear at this zoo.

There is almost nothing about the polar bear exhibit that would be suitable as part of a hippo exhibit. A full on demo would be required for just about anything.

Wouldn't you say the bears are part of the Adaption Zone?

It is. In fact on the map it looks more like it is out in Africa than it seems in real life. There is a good transition space between Africa and the polar bear exhibit (at least there used to be, Tanzania may have changed that).
    • Arizona Docent
It has indeed changed it. The ramp to Expedition Tanzania, which includes viewing of the rhino yard, is DIRECTLY next to the polar bear. Also, when you are in the new elephant area, if the polar bear is walking along the fence you can see it from the elephants.

While not wanting to enhter the debate, I would like to point out that the Polar bears I saw at Reid Park in the 80's were the whitest and cleanest Polar Bears I've ever seen in a zoo anywhere.
