When I visited the Rio Grande Zoo in August of 2010 there was a sign up at the elephant exhibit stating that the zoo's 6 elephants (2.4) had 5.5 acres to roam. There is a separate bull yard, and the recent developments to the exhibit make it one of the largest elephant habitats in North America.

The viewing is rather difficult though. Isn't there more room in the back of the enclosure that you cannot see. When I went in the summer, I don't remember a pool being this big before.

I agree with you in regards to the viewing, and in my review of this zoo back in August I even remarked that I found it difficult to believe that there was actually 5.5 acres for the elephants. There was a lot of construction still going on at the time, the pool is huge, and the two bulls have a separate yard that is not nearly as large as the main one. Perhaps the zoo is still planning to improve viewing conditions...

Yeah they need to improve this exhibit because they definitely have the framework or space for a good exhibit. The viewing area was nice, but they definitely need more viewing places of possibly the room in the back.

This exhibit has only ~2.1 acres of outdoor space. I know this is old but I was curious and measured it, nowhere near the falsely claimed 5.5.
