Actually, these animals came from Catskill and are thus hybrid African Wild AssXDomestic Donkey. And I've always heard that these were Nubian Wild Asses for those who believed them pure, but never Somali.

When I went to Catskill many years ago both “Nubian” and “Somali” wild ass were in the collection although I know there is doubt about their purity.

The so-called “Nubian” wild ass I saw at Catskill looked genuine though i.e. they lacked leg stripes and had a distinctive cross on the shoulder.

Whatever their purity, the asses pictured, with leg stripes and no cross on the shoulder, look like Somali wild ass.

@Tim May, yeah I posted that before I had seen his other wild ass photo of the "Nubian" Wild Ass and had thought that these were the "Nubians" and that he had just mistaken them for Somalis because that's what's kept in captivity. It seems Shadow Nursery may keep both "Nubian" and Somali Wild Asses.

If these are pure Somali Wild Asses, congratulations GiantEland as this is the best captive photo I've ever seen of the species!:)

Is this place a plant nursery with exotic animals? Are the animals bred for sale? Is this what happens with phase-out species?
    • ThylacineAlive
This is a plant nursery but the owner loves animals and seems to like to collect and breed rare and endangered species so they don't go Extinct in both the wild, and in captivity. The animals are not for sale and some of the animals have come from AZA collections that phased the out.

I may have gotten some information wrong and, if so, sorry, but that is how I understand the place.

Thanks! and I'd say that's a good summation of what Shadow Nursery is.
