The book America's Best Zoos states that the old elephant house is from the 1930's, and thus the new, 2011 habitat for elephants will be much more spacious and innovative. Soft floors will replace ancient, cracked concrete.

Was this the same building that used to house giraffes, hippos, and African elephants along with the Asian eles?
    • gorgeousingray
Yes, it was all the same building.
An addition to the building was built and serves as the current elephant barn. The old building is being gutted, and turned into a massive indoor sand community room for the winters of DC

Thanks gorgeousingray. I really liked the new exhibit, perhaps even better than the one at the LA Zoo. It will be interesting to see what this component of the exhibit looks like and how the elephants use it.

Looking at the house in more depth, I think it will be quite spacious for the three elephants they currently have right now. I think they plan to get more elephants in the future, but I'd have to see the final yard to give my input how many elephants I think could comfortably live in the space.

The barn has vastly improved from this picture.
