they look like Californian quail to me (I know this is an older photo but I just happened across it). Interestingly enough, both Californian and Gambel's quails are found in Salt Lake City which must mean visiting birders have to look twice at every covey.
Wow I don't even remember posting this. They are definitely California quail, which have been introduced to northern Utah. I could be wrong but i don't think Gambel's make it that far north.
I don't know anything about Utah geography. I'm familiar with Californian quail (introduced and common in New Zealand) but not with Gambel's other than that they are similar to Californian, so I checked the difference between them, and also checked which are found in Salt Lake City and apparently both species are.
