North American Living Museum - Camels

I know, not American. They are just housed here for the camel rides. I think at one time this was either for Moose or Caribou.

      It formerly housed Gray Wolves.

If you don't mind expanding the definition of American back in time 10,000 years ago, this would be accurate. Camels actually evolved in North America and lived here until the big Pleistocene extinction that wiped out most of the terrestrial megafauna outside of Africa and southeast Asia.

      Welcome back camels!

I am a little worried that Tulsa might get an "Elephant Oddessey" idea DavidBrown. Lets try not to risk that :)

I wasn't half as bothered as many other critics here at ZooChat, on finally seeing Elephant Odyssey for myself late last year. My biggest complaint would be the small space provided for the Lions. The whole theme didn't bother me in the least, having visited the La Brea Tar Pits and its adjoining Page Museum here in Los Angeles; and knowing the rich history of Southern California's past wildlife.

No. That would have been nice, but its definitely not true. I have been going to the Tulsa Zoo regularly since before the living museum buildings and this yard were ever built, was there when they opened, visited dozens of times in the years after, and was there as recently as three weeks ago. I can assure you that musk oxen were never displayed. The yard originally and for many years housed a small pack of grey wolves. After that the yard was vacant. Only in recent years was it used as a paddock for the camels just for convenience because they are used to give camel rides nearby. They were not ever an official part of the living museum exhibits. Now, with the reopening of this area as the Wild Life Trek, a part of the old wolf habitat is being used as an exhibit yard for endangered Siberian cranes. That's the whole history.
