Japanese Macaque walkthrough at Olomouc 30/05/10

Outstanding enclosure, although the fully walkthrough bit at the top has not been open on either of my visits. This time you were able to cross into the exhibit on the bridge, though.

The macaques have access to the full height of the trees.

This does appear to be an outstanding enclosure! Do you know how many macaques there are, as well as the approximate size of the enclosure?

Not sure of the size (and I'm rubbish at estimating!) but according to ISIS there are 15.14.4 Japanese Macaques (only Rome, Tierpark Berlin and Tokyo Tama list groups of larger numbers).

Seems very large, do the monkeys come to you?

Not especially close, but then you could only go in as far as the little hut in the midground here. Not sure why the top wasn't open.

Oh, ok. Can the monkeys climb onto the path? If so, then the hut might be closed as a shelter for them if it rains

The monkeys could climb onto the bridge I think, but none did. The hut is a public viewing area rather than an animal shelter. It may not offer great close up views but the sight of the monkeys up the trees is pretty special:

I would estimate the size of this enclosure to be some 2,5 ha = 6 acres (according to the zoo map).
The upper part of the visitor´s path can be used only when a member of staff is present, it means normally on busy summer weekends. The macaques had learned to steal not only food, but also vallets or handys from the visitors, so that the zoo decided to limit the access to the walk-through part of the exhibit.
