sabretooth cat (Xenosmilus hodsonae)

a sabretooth from the Pleistocene of Florida (USA). For those interested in palaeontology, the Palaeozoological Museum Of China is absolutely outstanding. The museum is on three floors, the lower one for dinosaurs including several fully-mounted skeletons (the displays are a mix of real fossils and casts) and fossil fish, the next floor for more dinosaurs and birds, and the third for mammals. Really fascinating fossils here, although unfortunately all the signage is in Chinese apart for the scientific names. Visited September 2013.

That doesn't surprise me. Lots of fantastic fossils have been found in China, and the country is becoming one of the new hot places for paleontology. (though unfortunately, it doesn't seem many Chinese students are interested in the field. Hopefully that will change, we could get so many new discoveries)

In fact the Chinese youths are fascinated in paleontology just in the same way of American youths, but the paleontologists are hard to find work in China, as few universities have paleontology departments, and few museums have enough money to employ long-time paleontologists, therefore students are reluctant to study paleontology. Meanwhile, there are so many fossil mongers and thieves in China that the few paleontologists have to fight against them and race against time all their lives.
