Helmeted Hornbill, Jurong BirdPark

Not my photo, found it online. Image credited to Doug J (http://www.pbase.com/dougj/birds_birds_birds). Taken at Jurong BirdPark. This is a helmeted hornbill, one of the rarest and a very spectacular species. It is the only hornbill species with a solid casque, contributing (including the skull) up to 10% of the birds' bodyweight.

WOW, you have done it again Zooish, what a wonderful bird, IF only we had a few Hornbills in oz, if only.

I think it's one of only 2 captive birds.

I believe several zoos in Southeast Asia have them, but these zoos are not registered with WAZA/ISIS.

BTW, Jurong have taken theirs off display. Not sure why, perhaps to stimulate breeding?

      Maybe they were getting stressed?
