Lories, Jurong BirdPark

Some of the lories found in the Lory Loft aviary, including a very rare shot of the Ornate Lorikeet on the lower right corner. There's only 2 of them in the aviary of nearly 1,000 lories/lorikeets.

      Don't the species hybridize?

Nice picture. I like the blue and red lories (Eos genus) the best.

Like ZooYouthBen pointed out, they do hybridize, but only among the rainbow species, and its not a big problem. Only a couple of hybirds have been spotted.

Yeah, the violet necked is a beauty! I love the blue streaked as well, the blue feathers on their heads/necks are stunningly electric blue

Could anybody please list all the lory/lorikeet species in this aviary and their approximate specimen numbers?

BTW, is there any chance that some lory/lorikeet individuals from this aviary could be sent to Europe? Huge flocks of lorikeets in captivity arent actually that common in Europe.

there's not c.1000 birds in this aviary any more, and I suspect that most or all of the species and subspecies held in here are common enough in Europe already.

Now that this picture has been bumped to the top... Sigh, never going to get such a variety of lories on a single tree again :( Stunning shot, by the way, curious as to how long you needed to wait, or if you even needed to, to get this vibrant picture. Would love to see more diversity in lory loft again, though I guess the imminent relocation makes that highly unlikely. Apparently the relocation can start as early as later this year, so I suppose the collection is going to start dwindling once again, a shame indeed.

In this thread Zooish states that relocation will occur in 2020: http://www.zoochat.com/266/mandai-development-449840/
So nothing should be leaving Jurong this year? Should be business as usual there for another few years?

Oh, a local news article mentioned that construction and relocation may start as early as later this year, in a photo caption. I guess theoretically the actual relocation of animals will happen a later time and it is construction that will start later this year :p. The new bird park is supposed to open in 2020 but I expect them to move at least some the birds to other facilities/new park before hand. I'm not sure as to whether all the animals will be moved before the new bird park opens or relocated in phases with some arriving after the opening of the new bird park, since the article stated that the current bird park will remain open till the new one opens.

Either way, because of the fact that the current bird park will continue to operate till the new one opens, I feel that is is safe to assume that the collection the current bird park holds will be reduced in some way or another in the coming years? Interested as to how everything will play out :) Sadly they have not released any further information on this so right now almost everything is mere speculation.
