How many of these guys do they have there zooish?
    • Zooish
We have a male and female pair. Unfortunately the female's not too keen on breeding.

We lost a male last year due to a viral infection.

What about an AI on the female?
    • Zooish
No plans on AI at the moment. For some reason, Singapore isn't keen on AI.

There might be some problems with her reproductive system as well.

Not sure what the plan is for the Indian rhinos now. Could be years before a new animal is acquired, if it does happen.

Komathi was born at Calcutta Zoo in 1979. She was sent to Koeln Zoo, Germany in 1986 and resided there with a bull from Stuttgart - if I am correct - and not a damn thing happened between the two. The bull was sent back to Stuttgart or Nuernberg and the female was loaned out to Singapore. Since, 1997 another 10 years have passed over and to my mind it is fat chance that this elderly female will ever breed! Consider also the reproductive ailments non-breeding older rhinos get in captivity.

I feel it is a real shame that the Calcutta line would be dying out with her passing. So, I am for AI in a big way to preserve her genes and will pursue that aim with vigour. It is not just for Singapore to decide, it is for the sake of the entire captive population!

@Zooish has anything changed in the last 10 years?
    • Zooish
@Cat-Man if you're asking if there has been any breeding success, the answer is no. The park has had only a pair of females for a few years now after the lone male died. 2 young males were acquired recently but i'm not sure if they are intended to breed with the existing 2 elderly females.
