False Gharial, Singapore Zoo

2 years ago Steve Irwin n team came to Singapore to help move these guys to new enclosures. The biggest one we have is almost 5 metres long.

      Yeah Mark, they're an amazing species indeed. Sadly very rare also, around 2,000 left in the wild. They're probably the crocodilian in most danger of extinction coz they dun breed well in captivity. So far there's only been one captive breeding success recorded in a Malaysian zoo.

      I saw one at los Angeles. Not nearly as big though. It looks massive.

      Yeah, I saw when the Los Angeles Zoo got theirs and they were tiny.

      We do have some very good ex-situ-success at the Utairatch Farm in Thailand, which bred several hundred and is still breeding on an annual basis. In the US, breeding successes took place at the Bronx and Miami Metro Zoo in the 80´s, at Cypress Gardens in Florida in 1999 and last year in San Antonio Zoo, Texas. In Europe, just one animal hatched at Fuengirola Zoo in Spain.
