Brazilian Tapir at the 'Pantanal' @ Szeged Zoo, Hungary

The Brazilian Tapirs in Szeged Zoo live in one of the South-American exhibits, which is called 'Pantanal'. This is a huge area in the zoo's South-America section: it has got a wetland profile, like swamps and open watersurfaces, but there are open grassy areas and forested habitats, too. Tapirs share the enclosure with Capybaras. This amazing enclosure very similar to the 'original' Pantanal, and animals enjoy that very much. Photo taken August 2007.

Looks fantastic! If it weren't for the two zoo visitors in the background I would have sworn it was a photograph from South America.

I saw a photo of this exhibit last year and I still think it is the best tapir enclosure I have ever seen.

Yes, maybe one of the best tapir enclosure, I think, too. But unfortunately the matter not as easy as we thought that firstly: certainly really naturalistic and appropriate exhibit for the animals and also for the "zoofans", but since this area is very huge and has very dense natural vegetation on many part, there is too difficult to have glimpse the animals for several times ... consequently if the visitors can't see the animals easily, they just walk away with the impression, said "Oh, there is nothing here" ... this may be a problem with the exhibits such this, to increase the chance of the visibility of the animals is always a challenge for the experts ...
Otherwise, about this exhibit: I've just visited this exhibit for two occasions, and I saw the animals every time, but it's true that I spent more time there than the visitors ...
