To be precise, this is just the West African Crocodile - the term West African Nile Crocodile still applies to a valid taxon, Crocodylus niloticus chamses.
You're absolutely right! And I've now seen both of those taxa this year. I'm just not a fan of the name 'desert crocodile'. Not too sure why though.
On the other hand, the term West African Crocodile could lead to a confusion with the West African Dwarf Crocodile (if a picture isn't available). At least, that was happened to me, as I read the headline and thought there must be the wrong picture...
