Over 20 teporingos live here and they breed every year. The rabbit dens are in the back. This exhibit uses volcanic rock and native grasses. painted buntings share this nice exhibit.

So nice to know that they breed every year! The ones of Nagoya comes from here? Will Los Coyotes send stock overseas to more zoos for breeding program?
    • carlos55
Yes the nagoya teporingos come from the mexico city zoos. Chapultepec, Los Coyotes and San Juan de Aragon have about 300 teporingos, most off exhibit. The problem with teporingos is that they are very adapted to high altitudes. Durrell and Anterp colonies died out because of this. The challenge is how to keep them well at lower altitudes.

Isn't there a small population in Japan currently?

Yes those are the teporingos in Nagoya zoo.

Oh sorry I didn't recognize the zoo name. Is that zoo high altitude?

I wonder how they'd fair at a zoo like Denver or something.

Thylo, Nagoya is a port, not the best place to send teporingos. On the other hand Denver who be great for volcano rabbits.

Wouldn't Cheyenne Mountain be even better?
    • carlos55
Yes, now we know the best zoos for teporingos in the US, all we need is a binational plan like the ones for mexican wolves, penisular pronghorn or california condors. but i do not think it will be important for the current US adminstration.

There are a fair few mountain zoos in Europe as well who'd appreciate them I think!
