The hippo enclosure is netted over and stocked with birds including Pink-backed Pelicans, Abdim's, Yellow-billed and African Openbill Storks, Grey-necked Crowned Cranes, Hammerkop, White-headed and Palmnut Vultures, African Spoonbills, Sacred, Hadada and Southern Bald Ibis, White-headed Duck, Cape Teal, Blue-winged Goose and more. There are also separate paddocks for Lowland Nyala and Red River Hog, as well as a Malawi cichlid tank and a carp-stocked pool for the hippos.

I don't know why this is so uncommon in zoos - have the big animals inside what are basically giant aviaries. I used to do this sort of thing in my fantasy zoos when I was a kid.

Is the netting as "invisible" in real life as it appears to be in the photos?
    • Maguari
@Chlidonias The mesh is not invisible, but certainly not intrusive.

This enclosure was genuinely one of the best I've seen. We were to see another masterpiece of the art in the okapi aviary at Doue later in the trip - of which more later!
