Caribbean flamingos have been the first animal "welcoming" visitors to Zoo Antwerpen since 1993, when a "show enclosure" for them was constructed at this location.

In 2016 the flamingo enclosure was renovated and enlarged with the addition of a new greenhouse for indoor housing to its current form. Younger animals from other zoos were also added around that time to encourage breeding.

And it worked, as in 2018 two Caribbean flamingos were born at Antwerp Zoo, the first since 1991. The babies were named Tajo and Tinto. Unfortunately one is being reared by the keepers after its parents stopped properly caring for it following an incident with a gull. The keepers take it for a walk amongst its fellows flamingos every day.

PS: there is indeed no fence at the front side. I assume the water being relatively deep at the edge of the pool works as a barrier.

@KevinB I don't think deep water can be used as a flamingo barrier. Flamingos can swim.

@birdsandbats I'm sorry, I forgot about that. Easy to do so as you so very rarely see it (they generally don't do it, or even get a chance to do it).

There is not hotwire or anything else visible anywhere, so honestly I don't know how the flamingos are kept in their exhibit.

They can swim but can they climb out of the water from a certain depht?

Note also that the way the bank is constructed changes at the point where the low fence in front of the tree meets the pond, and then go's around. So i guess the pond is much deeper there which make's it probably very difficult to climb out.
