Wellington Zoo map 1994 (large version)

This appears to be a map from mid-1994. There is a lot of text information on the reverse side, including a mention of a baby chimp born in May 1994. On the map itself, there is a pair of Snow Leopards pictured (at bottom-right) and these died in 1994 (the male) and 1995 (the female) respectively.

I have two versions of this map - a very large colour one (about 42cm high and 59cm long) and a smaller black-and-white one (21cm high and 30cm long). The colour one is easy to navigate, but the black-and-white one is horrible - without colour and in a smaller format everything is just a jumbled mess. It is interesting that these maps give names to all the paths around the zoo, in a very "San Diego" sort of way - there's even a "Horns and Hooves Circle".

Some of the species depicted (or named in the key) which are no longer at the zoo include Zebra, Arctic Wolf, Camel, Collared Peccary, Pig-tailed Macaque, Aoudad, American Bison, Blackbuck, Sitatunga, Tahr, Snow Leopard, White-nosed Coati, Sugar Glider, and loads of birds such as Antipodes Island Parakeet, Tawny Frogmouth, Barn Owl, White Ibis, Kookaburra, Magpie Goose, Noisy Pitta, Saddleback, Australian Pelican, and Common Rhea (the moa-looking bird at far right).

Species which had already disappeared since the late 1980s include Eurasian Badger, Kinkajou, Common Raccoon, Geoffroy's Cat, and Capybara.
