Wellington Zoo map 2008

A very boring and simplistic map from 2008.

The last Arabian Camel in New Zealand had died in 2004 and a Cheetah enclosure is in its place. The Zebras would also be gone by the following year (2009).

The two aviaries near the bottom-right (above the peccaries) were actually blocked off from visitors by now, and were later demolished (this is the site of the current zoo hospital).

The "Bird Valley" (on the left of the map where there is an icon for Campbell Island Teal) was greatly reduced in diversity from the 1980s, with several of the aviaries housing "filler species" such as bantams and magpies.

There had been some substantial changes at the top of the zoo, with the top-right area being largely redeveloped for African animals. The main area here was under construction for the "African Savannah" (not actually completed at the time the map was printed), while the former Giraffe enclosure (to the left) would later become a new home for the Sun Bears. The Red Pandas had also moved to their current location (left of the Cheetah icon; previously they were at top-right, which on this map is now labelled Agouti and Serval).

@zooboy28 that's exactly what I thought when I was looking at it today. I guess their thought process was that visitors want to quickly find where the most popular species were - the chimps, lions, meerkats ... er, Campbell Island Teal ... - and so the key made that possible. But then you're like "what about the tiger?" I don't like this map much at all.

Also worth noting, I guess, is that at this time there was a Meerkat enclosure viewed from the cafe at the entrance (later used for Pigmy Marmosets - I think still today, I never go into the cafe).
