Alice Springs Desert Park

May 2007. This park is in the dead centre of Australia, and is a brilliant place to visit. It is extremely similar to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the U.S.

It's a shame that there are currently only 5 photos of this facility in the ZooChat Gallery. Oddly, all 5 photos were posted by Canada's own snowleopard.

I visited this park about ten years ago, and I know I took some slides. I'll see if I can find them and upload some. I don't think I took too many though.

Many Aussies that I met in 2007 hadn't even been to the Red Centre, but for my wife and I that was the highlight of our 6-week Australian honeymoon and surpassed what we saw in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, Cairns and throughout Tasmania. The gigantic rock Uluru (the world's largest) and Kings Canyon are staggering natural formations, and Alice Springs Desert Park has a strong resemblance to ASDM in the U.S. The nocturnal house there is surely one of the best on the planet, and my only complaint about the interior of Australia's vast landscape is the overwhelming presence of flies. I even swallowed one as it zoomed down my throat!

      snowleopard: 2 questions
      1. What are the highlights of the Alice Springs nocturnal house?
      2. How do flies taste?

First of all, make sure you watch the video about the nocturnal house on this link as it accurately gives an impression of the extravagant size of many of the habitats:

Nocturnal House - Alice Springs Desert Park

The park has over 60 species of bird and many of them are not found anywhere else but Australia. Inside the nocturnal house there is an extensive list of species, including rufous hare wallaby, greater stick-nest rat, kultarr and western quoll. There are 4 species that are possibly not found at any other zoo on the planet (thorny devil, desert skink, spinifex legless lizard and Lake Eyre dragon) and a fantastic collection of desert critters but I do not have a comprehensive total. Some of that information I retrieved from my copy of "Zoo Grapevine" magazine (winter 2010/2011 issue).

Just a comment on the lake eyre dragons, other institutions such as adelaide and melbourne have them, and I also thing it is possible for private enthusiasts to own them, on rare the rare occassion they are available.
