      Madagascar: "Javan" Hissing Cockroach. September 11, 2018. Who else thought this species was native to Java until now?

      @birdsandbats I'm going to guess that the type locality was erroneously listed as Java for whatever reason, but that's nothing other than an educated guess.

      @ThylacineAlive - the species was first described in a paper on Malaysian cockroaches in the collections of the Dresden Museum. There were a lot of new species described in the paper (seemingly with "Malaysia" being a general usage for "southeast Asia") and presumably the specimen(s) of this particular species were either unlabelled or incorrectly labelled with collection locality. However the paper is in German and doesn't appear to be available online so I haven't read it.


      There are lots of animal and plant species with specific names given in error (perhaps my favourite is papua for the Gentoo Penguin).
