Komodo Dragon Outdoor Enclosure

Komodo Dragon Outdoor Enclosure

Outdoor enclosure for the solitary Komodo 'Pete', a juvenile male. This is a great little sun trap, measuring about 10 ft by 12 ft*, to complement his quite attractive indoor enclosure.

*If I'm wrong then sorry, measuring by eye isn't my strong point. Hence the "about" in my comment. :)

I find this enclosure very disappointing when compared to the usual standard at BNC.

I also get the impression they only intend to keep 'Pete' whilst he is still a juvenile.

It has to be said that this photo doesn't really do it justice, especially with the very nicely furnished and designed indoor exhibit being the main attraction. The main plus point with this though is it's prime location, designed for maximum UV exposure so he can get the benefit of natural sunlight most of the time he spends out there.

I get that impression as well, but with the Komodo EEP going the way it is then that's probably not a bad thing. having somewhere for juvenile or well represented males to go is always going to be useful. Otherwise you end up like Colchester who have/had Komodos in sooooo many exhibits... :)

@Brum Colchester was probably like "Edinburgh has Meerkats all over the zoo, so we're going to do the same - but with Komodo Dragons!"

@Chlidonias Genuinely made me laugh, and it was something I debated trying to fit into my original post! :D

@Brum and @Benosaurus, the enclosure is not yet finished. It still needs furnishing and an outdoor heater installed.

@Leopardus yeah, I should have mentioned it wasn't done in my original comment, but I'm still quite impressed just with the placing. It's by far the bit of the centre that gets the most sun. I'm also glad it didn't take away from the lynx enclosure, which is what I thought the plan was. :)

Has the outdoor enclosure been completed yet?

@Benosaurus it has been completed now, I'll see if I got any pictures today.
