Pinniped Exhibit

Obviously a pretty terrible exhibit, but at least it seems to have some length to it.

In California there was, up until last year, the Morro Bay Aquarium. The facility had a pinniped exhibit that attracted many protests and it was the main reason why the entire aquarium closed once its lease was up. I visited the establishment in 2017 and the pool, while a bit smaller, does bare some resemblance to the pinniped pool in this photo from Nanjing Underwater World. I wonder if the Chinese aquarium has ever had protest demonstrations?

Here is a photo from the now defunct Morro Bay Aquarium:

Even though the United States has more than 160 public aquariums, including several that are up there amidst the best of their kind, there is still room for a place like Seaside Aquarium in Oregon. The Harbour Seal exhibit there is awful and has also seen the occasional protest:

@snowleopard protest demonstrations are not generally tolerated in Mainland China..

Sadly this kind of cramped indoor pinniped exhibit is too common in Asia, and it's not just a China problem; I saw similar in Japan.

@snowleopard I feel like protesters might end up in a concentration camp, or else gunned down like Tienanmen. China doesnt give a crap about human rights let alone seal rights...

@DelacoursLangur I don't think it's that bad.I think if you aren't protesting the government it should be ok? I believe the main cause is not the government banning, but rather just no one come out and say sth.

@aardvark250 Maybe im being a bit extreme when it comes to zoo animals. I am just really distraught at stuff going on in China right now politically (Uighur cultural genocide and interment, and the continued repression of hong kong's citizens.) The fact that only 30 years ago the same leadership massacred its own citizens; students peacefully protesting; and gets to pretend it never happened boils my blood.

@DelacoursLangur That isn't really how it works, the government carries a big stick but generally walks pretty softly. The atrocities you cite are exceptions (not that I am in anyway downplaying them), most people in the PRC meet state repression in much subtler ways and unless they are actively dissenting are generally unaware of it.

@aardvark250 Can you give any examples? Occasionally parents protesting abuse at kindergartens or employees campaigning for the end of inhumane working conditions in factories are given a very short leash (usually because these kinds of protests can flare up very quickly before local authorities get on top of them), but even in these cases after a few days key players are put under huge pressure and either the protests or eventually the leaders themselves disappear. You are right however, that the vast majority of Mainland visitors would see no reason to protest this exhibit.

@Giant Panda yes that's true, but my word there's a long way to go.

@FunkyGibbon I hope that is so, the best case scenario for china would be a gradual and peaceful democratization. That will only likely come after the economic growth takes a hit, and even then I fear the regime has learnt the power of violent crackdowns.

I think we have probably reached the endpoint of how productive it is to discuss Chinese politics on ZooChat :p
