Unknown gull, please help ID!

In the port near New England aquarium, Boston, MA I tought first in delawarensis but the ring of the bill is different, an the legs are wrong colour, so I don't know

      It's not Larus delewarensis, no pure-blooded Ring-bill will have a red gony spot.

      When was this photo taken? Will help narrow possibilities.

      Great Argus, it was taken a couple of weeks ago if that helps.

      @Kakapo It does, thanks. It looks like a near-adult California Gull, although that is not an expected species for that area. Near-adult Herring Gull would be expected and is possible.

      Oh! Thanks! I would be very interested in know if my photo is from a California gull or a Herring gull :)

      @Kakapo I'll do a bit farther digging and see if I can conclusively pin one. Most gulls are a tough lot. :p
