Oh wow! I didn't expect to see this. How many collections in Japan keep Goliath frog and how are they doing? How and when were they sourced?
    • RatioTile
@UngulateNerd92 To my knowledge this is the only institution in Japan that has them. They've been there 1-2 years, and from reading an article in Japanese apparently they come from Cameroon.

@RatioTile Oh wow! Interesting. Thank you! How big is their exhibit? Are there any plans to breed them? To be honest, at full size this species is going to need an exhibit about the size of a typical master bedroom.
    • RatioTile
@UngulateNerd92 There’s 2 exhibits for them. One is the size of a quarter of a bedroom, or a natural history museum diorama. The other is a walk-through room with streams and a small waterfall, home to numerous tree frogs as well.

@RatioTile wow! Very nice! They really went to a lot of trouble to accommodate those animals! Good on them!

@UngulateNerd92 For sure! KawaZoo was really professional (although the concept of a walk-through aviary-like frog room puts a lot of trust that guests don't trample frogs or steal them). If it weren't in such a remote spot (in front of a national park with 7 waterfalls) I'd imagine it would draw lots of tourists.

@RatioTile ah very interesting! Are frogs their specialty? Perhaps the Japanese version of Chemnitz Zoo? A foggy walk through aviary just for frogs, what a fascinating concept! Would it be fair for me to assume that Japanese zoo patrons are more well behaved and self-regulated than their typical American counterparts?
    • RatioTile
@UngulateNerd92 This is an amphibian-only zoo. And yes, I would argue that Japanese zoo patrons are the most well-behaved, disciplined, and polite zoo patrons anywhere in the world. The KawaZoo's atmosphere was more like a library than a zoo. However in other zoos and aquariums there are little kids who will squeeze and jostle to get a good view, and that's annoying.

does this frog still exist at KawaZoo?
    • RatioTile
@dillotest0 Unclear to me. It was there in a YouTube video from one year ago.
