Tiergarten Hellabrunn

Composite and wooden model zoo 'Tierpark Hellabrunn', by dolls-house maker Gottschalk. Early 20th century. A special toy for a very lucky boy from a wealthy family!

That is fantastic! Where would you even be able to find something like this these days? Do the barred cages each open individually or does the back panel slide out to reveal the compartments? Either way this looks to be a treasured memento of zoo history and thanks for sharing the image.

It is! Yes, all of the backs of the cages are hinged and open individually; and the rooms above are lit by electric light. Many of my collection have come from other collectors, mainly in Germany, but believe it or not this one was found on eBay.de Some of these toys were modeled on specific zoo enclosures of their day, carnivore buildings, primate houses, owl castles etc, and now the actual zoo buildings have gone, provide a fascinating glimpse of the past. Such examples are rare now, and actually were never as common as the dolls-houses made by the same makers. Their production runs were short and numbers made were much smaller, and generally little boys did not look after their toys in the way little girls did.
