Is there more? If not this is just as bad as South lakes
    • MagpieGoose
@taun There is one more next door on-show, but there is also off-show indoors

It drives me nuts how people on this forum so quickly criticize zoos every time they show how animals are actually managed behind the scenes. Concrete and bars are the easiest to clean and the animals dont care most of the time, hell most of them cant wait to get back in their dens.. You should be far more worried about the facilities who arnt willing to show behind the scenes areas.

@DelacoursLangur Chester zoos indoor dens are like this, I have not issue with the style, just this is on show. Where do they go to get some peace? If they plan to breed where is the cubbing den area?
    • DelacoursLangur
@taun Most animals are locked out of there indoor accommodations during the daytime anyways at most zoos, at least this way they can access the indoors 24/7 with privacy at night. I have no idea about the breeding situation so I cant answer to the second.

@DelacoursLangur privacy at night is not a justification for poor housing of bears. Bears which are known to have mental issues if not kept right.

We should all strive for the best. The outdoor area looks great, needs a bit more planting for hiding areas, so why cannot the dens be offshow?

@taun Your missing my point, at most zoos the animals are locked out of their dens during the day so that visitors can see them, by having the den open to the public the animals can be given more freedom to go in and out as they please. You said yourself that you dont have an issue with this style of den, so I dont know why your now saying that it is "poor housing".

@DelacoursLangur Its poor for a number of reasons. Style has nothing to do with it.

      1) its on show, here is no need for sleeping dens to be on show, there is very little places the bear can escape to hide if it so wishes.
      2) there is just two dens and one outdoor area, Chester had management issues with their bears...its not acceptable to keep one locked up in this imo.
      3) view could be limited to reduce stress on bears if they have to be on-show.

It should be the bears choice if they are view or not, even if they are locked outdoors they should still have ample hiding spaces if they choice to hide. Viewing can be encouraged with feeds and talks.

This is illegal in the UK. All animals must have the ability to hide from view at all time. This is conditional under the Zoo Licensing Act.

Am I wrong, but this is NOT behind the scenes...?
    • DelacoursLangur
@Andrew Swales I agree that animals should have places to hide from viewing, but I also dont have a problem with zoos showing the public how they are managed behind the scenes. By behind the scenes I mean out of their naturalistic exhibit in a separated area designed for management and care. I would be much more worried about the zoos ashamed to show off their facilities than the ones displaying them.

In response to tuan, dont know the specifics of the situation at this facility and whether they have to rotate. I would agree that long term having to lock a bear inside half the time isnt a good situation. If they have access to another enclosure with hiding opportunities however I dont see the problem.
