Anyone know what the long-term plan is for Burgers and its elephant holding. While the facility is really nice aesthetically half an acre is really too small, and I fear the indoor accommodations may be woefully outdated as I believe they are off show. Perhaps transition it to rhinos and build a nice elephant complex?

I don't know what they plan to do with their elephant exhibit in the long term and I do'nt think there is any public information on that. I do agree with you that the exhibit, while acceptable currently, is starting to become outdated when compared to other facilities.

I have actually been in the indoor accommodations on a special activities day, they are normally behind the scenes. Those stables weren't totally unacceptable and they had made some concessions to modern standards, but they were quite dark and not that great compared to other elephant houses. I don't think I could post pictures from that day on here though unfortunately.

They already have white rhinos in decent and I believe fairly recently updated housing in their Safari area, mixed with various kind of hoofstock. So I don't think they would build another rhinoceros exhibit. However, the space is big enough that a lot of larger animals could be an option. I'm not sure there would be enough space to update the elephant facility, though. That said I think they'll be able to continue keeping a few old elephants for a least a few more years.

@KevinB Maybe Indian Rhinos, they often fit in repurposed elephant exhibits with relatively minimal renovations. I think if they want to get any new elephants however they will need to invest considerably in a whole brand complex if they want to keep up the standards of the rest of the zoo. Perhaps they could focus on a multi-generational african elephant herd to go with the savannah area of the zoo, that seems to be where the most room for a new exhibit is available.

That or go with the boring option and get out of the pachyderm game...

@DelacoursLangur While this exhibit can probably still stand as it is for a few more years, I think Burgers' Zoo will at some pont realize it is not up to speck with the zoo's general innovative and immersive nature and seek to change it into something new, whether with elephants or not.

Burgers' Zoo I think will definitely come up with another cool new project at some point in the future, I'm sure they have more things up their sleeves. Burgers' Zoo however generally does not talk about their future plans publicly at all until shortly before they start preparing for a new project and they have to go public as they start to do visible things like moving animals and demolition.

I thought of another possibility for the location just now. The site of the elephant exhibit is not far from the Desert building, so perhaps an outdoor desert-themed exhibit complex could be an interesting option. They could definitely do something with that I'd say.
