Weka (Gallirallus australis)

Kapiti Island, 2008

Weka (Gallirallus australis)
    • Chlidonias
The Weka on Kapiti Island, off Wellington, are considered to be hybrid birds derived from introductions over a hundred years ago. In about 1896 one Stewart Island Weka (G. a. scotti) and two North Island Weka (G. a. greyi) were released on the island, and in about 1904 "several" Western Weka (G. a. australis) from the South Island were also released there.
